Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk: love, understanding, value accomplishment and belonging.

The Billy Lynn under Ann Lee’s characterization went against the hero savior movies all along in the United States. Rather, the role seems more “human.”

Before the B group carried out a mission, the squad leader said “I love you” to every soldier. This “love” gave the courage for them to face the death. The whole B group united and went forward to fight. The moment of shooting, however, they were holding extreme fright and horror and the bullets shoot out unorderly and franticly. Orders from the squad leader were all ignored.

I was shocked seeing this scene. So that it’s all about acting in the traditional American war-hero movies.

Billy accidently became a hero – he rushed out first for “saving lives” then to “kill enemies.”

The injured squad leader was pushed in trench by Billy. He thought he’s safe. Suddenly, the local Iraqi broke in and the two had to face the close fighting – either dead or alive. The moment Billy killed was the peak of fear. The whole scene presented that, Billy was not aggressively killing the enemy, but just to defend himself.

Back to the sports ground, there were some scenes: an audience was acting irony and cynical, a value conflict was erupting with the movie investment giant, and the B group were having a group fight with the staffs. At this moment, Billy started to question the situation which everyone gave an applause to him.

More, facing the hero-style worship from cheerleader Faison Zorn, Billy thought that he could finally take off his armor and have a home to return like a happy family. However, he totally woke up from the dream after hearing his girlfriend’s answer.

After saying goodbye, the girlfriend left without any pity and breaking hearts. Billy’s heart could not turn colder. He realized it’s just imaginary that bursting tears would come from lover’s happy future expectation with the national anthem sang in the background.

At the end of the movie, the love between sister and brother were fully presented. The sister tried hard and arranged everything in time to convince Billy not returning to Iraq, He hesitated, however, “no” was his final answer. He knew that he didn’t belong to his homeland anymore. The sister understood and gave her wishes at the end.

He belonged to B group. The squad leader had been addressing that B group needed Billy’s calm character to have their best performance. By saying “I love you” to each other, they gathered together and accomplished each other’s life values.

Ganesha from Hindu reminded – B group had chosen to challenge the fear of death and feel the love between fellow soldiers in this life. They belonged to the battlefield in Iraq. Through this, they have accomplished their values of lives.
